Rail worker hurt as hole collapses in Stafford

A railway worker had to be rescued after a 10ft (3m) hole he was in collapsed, leaving him crushed.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was thought to be buried up to his chest by soil near to a Network Rail depot in Stafford, the ambulance service said.

He had crushing injuries to his chest and a back injury.

The fire service said it sent staff to "a trench rescue of a railway employee" after emergency services were alerted at about 04:00 BST.
