Stoke-on-Trent's former library has been sold for £128,000 - £40,000 more than expected.

The Grade II-listed building, which closed in 2008, went under the hammer at the Moat House hotel on Monday with a guide price of £85,000.

It has been sold to a group of businessmen who do not want their identities revealed.

Amy Dudley, representing them, said they were "keen to preserve the history" of the London Road building.

"They appreciate how important this is to the local people of Stoke," she said.

She said the new owners would be asking people how it could be used by the community.

Campaigners had criticised Stoke-on-Trent City Council for putting the building up for sale but the authority said it has no use for the building.
