Cannock Chase police officer shot in eye with air rifle

A police officer has been shot in the eye while helping ambulance staff deal with an aggressive patient.

Staffordshire Police received a call from a crew in Rugely requesting assistance under the Mental Health Act at about 19:30 BST on Sunday.

During the incident at Wat Tyler Close, a 34-year-old man fired what police said they suspect was an air rifle.

An officer from the Cannock Chase local policing team was injured in the eye and remains in hospital for assessment.

Ch Insp Stephen Morrey from Staffordshire Police said it had been a "distressing incident".

"My thoughts are currently with the officer and his family hoping that the injury is not permanent."

A man was arrested and is in police custody.
