Body found on Gran Canaria is missing Suffolk woman

A body found on a Spanish island has been formally identified as a missing Suffolk woman who is at the centre of a murder inquiry.

Sarah Shields was on holiday in Gran Canaria but was reported missing when she failed to return to Ipswich.

An Ipswich man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

Police have until early Friday morning to question or charge the 36-year-old.

Spanish police and detectives from the Norfolk and Suffolk major investigation team are holding a joint inquiry into the death of Ms Shields.

Suffolk Police said that a woman found dead in Gran Canaria on 7th July had been confirmed as being the missing woman.

"She has been formally identified as 23-year-old Sarah Shields from Ipswich," a police spokesman said.

"Sarah was on a two-week holiday in Gran Canaria but was reported missing when she failed to return home on Sunday 11th July as planned."

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact officers.
