Surfer who drowned at Lowestoft named by police

A surfer who died after getting into difficulties in the sea off Lowestoft in Suffolk has been named by police.

Steven Sparks, 33, of north London, was rescued from the water opposite Hotel Hatfield on Saturday and treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

An inquest into his death was opened on Wednesday and has been adjourned to a date to be fixed.

The cause of Mr Sparks' death has been given as drowning. Inquiries on behalf of the coroner are under way.

Police said there were not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.
