Suffolk hospital staff win award for collecting bones

Collecting bones after operations such as hip replacements, for grafts, has won an award for a Suffolk hospital.

Staff at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds received the award from NHS Blood and Transplant.

The hospital recorded an "exceptional performance" recovering femoral heads for bone donation, a spokesman said.

Patients undergoing orthopaedic operations are given the opportunity to donate bone for grafts to fill in defects in more complicated surgery.

Adrian August, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, said: "The whole team, from our colleagues in pre-assessment to our clinicians and theatre staff, has been involved in promoting this programme as it can bring such benefits to future patients.

"We'd like to pass our thanks to all of the patients who have donated their bone so far and helped others to get back on to their feet more quickly."
