Ipswich woman hanging by foot from cellar ladder saved

An 86-year-old woman from Suffolk is recovering in hospital after she was left hanging by her foot from a cellar ladder for 24 hours.

The East of England Ambulance Service (EEAS) was called to a house in Manor Road, Ipswich, after a friend of the woman raised the alarm.

She was found hanging upside down after her foot had become trapped in the ladder on Tuesday.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service helped rescue the woman.

She was taken by paramedics to Ipswich Hospital suffering from hypothermia and leg injuries.

'Caring friend'

An EEAS spokeswoman said: "The woman concerned is making a remarkable recovery and we wish her all the best.

"Paramedics and fire crews worked very well together in rescuing her from a traumatic situation and our crews did a great job in treating her and getting her to hospital so quickly.

"We'd like to thank everyone concerned but special praise goes out to the friend who called us.

"If such caring did not exist things might have turned out very differently.

"It just goes to demonstrate that just a simple check on a friend or neighbour can potentially save a life."
