Bury St Edmunds jeweller stabbing: Police granted more time

Police have been granted more time to question a 34-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder of a jewellery shop owner in Suffolk.

The body of Peter Avis, 66, was found at his home above the Collis and Son shop in Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmunds, on Friday morning.

The man, who was the first to be arrested, can be held by officers until Wednesday.

Three other men and a woman continue to be questioned.

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Avis died of stab wounds.

In a family statement issued by police, he was described as "rather eccentric but a gentle, old-fashioned and private man" who was "perhaps extremely vulnerable".

A 30-year-old man was detained on suspicion of murder in north London on Sunday and an 18-year-old man was arrested in Bury St Edmunds on Monday on suspicion of murder and conspiracy to commit burglary.

A man, aged 26, and a woman, 27, are also being questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary.
