A building site worker is in a serious condition with severe facial injuries after he was struck by a digger and fell 20ft (6m) down a hole in Suffolk.

Emergency services were called to the building site on Fentons Way, Kesgrave, Ipswich, just after 10:00 GMT.

East of England Ambulance Service spokesman Gary Sanderson said the man had "serious facial injuries which were potentially life threatening".

The casualty, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to Ipswich Hospital.

A rapid response car, an ambulance and duty manager from Ipswich ambulance station were sent to the scene.

Due to the nature of the call, the trust's hazardous area response team and the Essex Air Ambulance also attended.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary said the Health and Safety Executive had been informed.
