A family escaped unharmed as fire destroyed the thatched roof of their Suffolk home.

About 70 firefighters spent three hours tackling the blaze, close to the B1115 in Hitcham, near Stowmarket.

A fire service spokesman said the occupants had escaped from the property by the time crews arrived at about 23:00 BST on Sunday.

An investigation has begun into what started the blaze. The B1115 was closed while crews tackled the incident.

The spokesman said the roof had been completely destroyed, but some possessions on the ground floor of the property had been salvaged.
