Stradbroke farm fire: 400 pigs believed to have died

An estimated 400 pigs have died in a fire on a Suffolk farm.

The fire took hold in two buildings - one containing about 400 tonnes of straw - at the farm in Laxfield Road, Stradbroke, just after 16:00 BST on Sunday.

An investigation is under way but Carl Francis from Suffolk Fire and Rescue said there was nothing to indicate it was "suspicious".

Other animals were released from a nearby unit and saved, he said.

More than 40 firefighters attended and had a "difficult task" containing the fire to prevent it spreading to the barn containing the straw and adjacent units containing pigs, Mr Francis said.

"It was an accident. I do not believe there would be another cause but an investigation will look into other possibilities, such as electrical," he added.

"About 400 pigs perished in the fire but the farmer will have to confirm the exact number."
