Ipswich council houses given planning permission

Approval has been given to build 108 new council houses in Ipswich.

The borough council has granted planning permission for land off Bader Close in Priory Heath. Seventy-seven of the houses will have two bedrooms.

Eleven four-bedroom houses and 20 bungalows will also be built on the site, which was used by the Four O Five Sports & Social Club until 2002.

The council said the £10m estate would be the largest block of council housing built in Ipswich for 50 years.

Earlier this year, the local authority began building its first council houses for 20 years in conjunction with the Orwell Housing Association.

Building work has already begun on three houses on Coltsfoot Way in Chantry and four on Whitton Church Lane in north-west Ipswich.

The council said it hoped work could start on the Bader Close homes next spring and be completed by the end of 2014.
