A Suffolk sports coach who raped young female athletes has had his appeal against conviction dismissed.

Stephen Benson, 51, of Copdock, near Ipswich, was jailed for 16 years in 2013 after being found guilty of 19 sex offences between 1989 and 2011.

The jury at Ipswich Crown Court heard the former Ipswich Harriers Athletics Club coach groomed his three victims.

The Court of Appeal in London has rejected his attempts to overturn the guilty verdicts.

The three victims, who gave evidence at his trial, were aged between 15 and 18 when the offences took place.

Benson was also a PE teacher at Copleston High School in Ipswich, although none of the offences took place there.

Benson was granted leave to appeal in November.
