A 52-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of the murder of an elderly man has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Dennis Nicholls, 89, died after being found with serious injuries in a house in Kirkley Run, Lowestoft on Wednesday evening, Suffolk Police said.

He had called officers to his home saying he had concerns for his safety.

Police have referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The force said the referral was a "routine procedure because there had been recent police contact with the victim prior to his death".

A post-mortem examination failed to establish the cause of death and further tests will be carried out, but officers said the death was being treated as murder.
