A 39-year-old man who raped an elderly woman twice in her home has been jailed for 16 years.

The attacks happened in the Walton area of Felixstowe, Suffolk, on the night of 27 September.

Adrian Udrea, of Blyford Way, Felixstowe, admitted two rapes and burglary at an earlier hearing at Ipswich Crown Court.

Suffolk Police called it a "horrific, degrading and vile act" and praised the victim for her bravery.

Officers said they were contacted shortly after 02:00 BST on 28 September by the woman who reported someone had broken into her flat and sexually assaulted her.

Udrea was arrested two days later.

'Beyond all comprehension'

Police said the victim, who had been asleep, also had jewellery stolen.

The force praised the victim for reporting the attack immediately and said it helped them arrest Udrea quickly.

Det Ch Insp Andy Smith said: "For an elderly lady to be subjected to such a horrific, degrading and vile act is beyond all comprehension.

"We cannot praise the victim enough for the bravery and determination she has shown in such terrible circumstances.

"We will continue to do all we can to try to support the victim, recognising that she may never fully recover from what has happened to her."

A statement from the victim's family said: "We are extremely grateful for all the support and help we have received from a number of agencies including social care services, the NHS and the Sexual Assault Referral Centre, along with the kindness shown to us by the community of Felixstowe and beyond.

"Without everyone's help we would not have coped.

"We are pleased with today's sentence and just hope we can come now come to terms with what has happened and have some kind of peace in the future."
