Work to improve the look of a canal in an area of Surrey has been completed.

Guildford Borough Council has installed new paving, railings, benches, mooring bollards and litter bins at Ash Wharf in Ash Vale, near Aldershot.

Native plants and ornamental shrubs and grasses have also been planted on the banks of the Basingstoke Canal.

Guildford Borough Council said the changes to the canal, which was first restored in the 1960s, had been welcome by residents.

Ash Wharf ward councillor Pat Scott said: "Many residents have commented on the impact of excellent design and planting by Guildford Borough Council at the Ash Wharf.

"It has dramatically improved the centre of the village, and added to the enjoyment of the canal facility."
