Surrey County Council offers phone apps

Mobile phone apps have been developed by Surrey County Council so residents can download online library books on to their smart phones.

The council has released the free apps for use on the iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile, as well as free software for use on computers.

More than 18,000 books have already been borrowed from the online library which has over 1,600 electronic titles.

The local authority is trying to get as many people as possible online by 2012.

Councillor Denise Saliagopoulos said creating an easy-to-use online library would help the council meet its target of getting 10,000 more people to use the internet by next year.
