Guildford man, 85, badly hurt in car crash

An 85-year-old man is critically ill in hospital after he was hit by a car driven by an 18-year-old girl.

The man was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London, after the accident in North Street, Guildford at 1540 BST on Friday.

Surrey Police said the air ambulance attended the scene, but the man was taken to hospital by road.

He received a serious head injury, a number of broken ribs and a broken collarbone. The driver was unhurt.

A police spokesman said the woman was from Godalming and had been driving a Vauxhall Corsa.

North Street, in the town centre, was closed for four hours while accident investigators were at the scene.

"There were many people in the area at the time and members of the public assisted the injured man with first aid before the arrival of the emergency services," said the spokesman.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
