Heathervale Recreation Ground vandals fell seven trees

Vandals have felled seven trees in a park near Addlestone using a hand saw to cut through the trunks about a metre from the ground.

Runnymede council said four of the trees in Heathervale Recreation Ground were mature and three were semi-mature.

Surrey Police said the area in New Haw was well used by families and walkers and residents would have seen or heard the offences taking place.

The local authority said the damage was discovered on Saturday 6 August.

Parks and amenities manager Peter Winfield said: "We are appalled by this mindless vandalism and saddened that trees which have been growing in the park for many years can be destroyed literally overnight.

"We are working with the police and will do all we can to track down those responsible."
