Guildford Police handed unexploded mortar shell

A police station in Surrey had to be evacuated after an unexploded mortar shell was handed in at the front counter by a member of the public.

A Surrey Police spokesman said the device was handed over at Guildford Police Station at 13.40 BST on Sunday.

An army bomb disposal team took the shell to Stoke Park where an area was cordoned off before a controlled explosion was carried out.

The police station in Margaret Road was evacuated as a precaution.

The spokesman said there was no danger to neighbouring properties.
