Man arrested over 2007 sex attack in Whyteleafe

A 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a sex attack in Surrey in 2007 that led to an appeal on the BBC's Crimewatch programme.

The 19-year-old victim was assaulted as she walked along the A22 Godstone Road in Whyteleafe with a friend, aged 21.

The older woman was pulled to the ground and punched before the attacker sexually assaulted the teenager.

Surrey Police said the man, who is of no fixed address, had been arrested and released on police bail.

The attack happened between 2230 and 2300 GMT on Saturday 8 December 2007 near the Whyteleafe Tavern pub.

Both girls fought back during the assault and the attacker ran off.

Det Con Kevin Booth said: "This assault, codenamed Operation Joule, was a huge investigation for detectives at the time and a reconstruction was featured on BBC One's Crimewatch.

"I hope this development reassures the victim, and her friend, that no matter how much time passes Surrey Police remains determined to identify their attacker and ensure he is brought to justice."
