Chertsey hospital opens special care unit for newborns

A nine-bed special care unit for mothers and their babies has opened at St Peter's Hospital in Surrey.

The unit has replaced a six-bed unit at the hospital in Chertsey.

Sister Therese Nursey said the aim of the unit was to keep mothers and babies together when newborns needed extra special care.

She said: "Preventing separation of the mother and baby allows for quicker bonding, less anxiety, and establishes feeding faster."

She added: "Subsequently this promotes earlier discharge, so less time is spent in hospital, and also prevents unnecessary admissions."
