Spades used in Surrey house burglaries

Spades left outside in gardens have been used by burglars to gain entry to two houses in Surrey.

Both properties in the Compton area of Guildford were targeted on Wednesday during the day, police said.

In the first, a spade was used to force part of a stable door open, enabling the thieves to use keys left in the lock to open the door of the house.

In the second, a spade was used to prise open the windows of a house, from which jewellery and medals were stolen.
