Fire crews check for Lingfield explosion site hotspots

Firefighters are still checking the scene of an explosion and major fire at a Surrey industrial estate which injured eight people.

Crews have continued to visit Hobbs industrial estate in Newchapel, near Lingfield, to make sure there are no hotspots which could reignite.

Eight people were injured in the blaze on Monday, three of them seriously.

Two patients are being treated at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead.

A third patient is receiving treatment at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in west London.

Five other people injured in the blaze have been discharged from hospital. Those injured were treated for burns, respiratory problems and head injuries.

A spokeswoman for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said: "The site is not closed, it's scaled down.

"We just send a crew out every couple of hours to make sure there are no hotspots."

The majority of the undamaged units at the industrial estate have reopened for business.

The fire is believed to have started in a unit which recycles IT and electrical items and printer ink cartridges.
