Byfleet cash machine raiders grab £9,000

Thieves got away with £9,000 after a raid on a cash machine at a petrol station in Surrey.

Police said the raiders forced open the machine on the forecourt of the Murco garage in Oyster Lane, Byfleet, between 01:15 GMT and 01:45 GMT on Friday.

The thieves, who were driving a white van, removed two grey plastic cassettes which contained the cash.

They tried to cover their tracks by moving and disabling security cameras. Police are appealing for witnesses.

Det Con Tim Barrett said the van was tatty and dragging a chain behind it.

"I am asking for information from members of the public who may have seen this van in the vicinity," he said.

"If anyone notices a vehicle of this description being used or parked in the locality I need to know its whereabouts and that of the cash boxes, which may have been discarded."
