Offer for Lightwater police station accepted

A police station in Surrey has been sold after the police authority agreed it could go on the market.

Surrey Police Authority, which oversees Surrey Police, said it had accepted an offer for Lightwater police station, subject to planning permission.

Officers based at the station will move to new premises on Bagshot High Street early in the new year.

The police authority said the identity of the successful bidder and the agreed price were confidential.

Peter Williams, chairman, said the sale was "a reminder that the difficult and radical change programme we began in 2009 to make savings throughout the organisation and release money for investment in the front line is still very much ongoing".

He added that a decision to recruit up to 200 extra police constables for Surrey by the end of the financial year with the savings made was on target.
