Referees have items stolen during Surrey football match

Football referees in Surrey are being urged to take extra security measures after two officials had jewellery and personal items stolen during a match.

Surrey County FA said thieves had targeted the officials' room and away changing rooms during a Southern League fixture at Uxbridge FC.

They stole items belonging to the referees including phones, MP3 players, sat navs, jewellery and watches.

The Surrey FA has now urged officials to take the minimum amount to matches.

A spokesman for Surrey County FA said: "This causes concern for all officials operating at every level, however it is clearly not possible to carry on to the field with you every valuable item.

"This incident has ramifications for all referees, and does mean that you need to be extra careful."

The officials' cars were also targeted during the incident which took place over the Christmas period.
