Silverware stolen from Littleton church on Good Friday

Silverware containing consecrated bread and wine was stolen from a Surrey church on Good Friday.

A silver chalice and a silver ciborium were taken from St Mary Magdalene Church, Littleton, while the building was open for prayer.

Rev Alison Waters said: "This is a cause of shock and sadness to the church community, especially for this to have happened on such a holy day."

She has appealed for anyone with information to contact Surrey Police.

Ms Waters added: "Whoever stole the items knew exactly what they wanted and where they would be so they must be familiar with church practice on Good Friday.

"We would love to keep our church open more often but events like this are a cause for nervousness.

"Of course, the church is insured and items can be replaced but the loss of trust and the sense of disgust at holy things being desecrated will take a long time to heal."
