The crew of a luxury pleasure boat had to be rescued after it became stuck while trying to pass under a bridge on the River Thames in Surrey.

Chertsey Bridge was closed to traffic in both directions from about 13:00 GMT on Saturday after the vessel collided with one of the arches.

Two fire engines and a fire boat were sent to the scene, where ropes were used to rescue the two people on board.

The bridge was checked by a structural engineer and reopened at 21:40 GMT.

The 40ft vessel, thought to be worth about £500,000, is believed to have misjudged the height of the flood-swollen river.

It was towed away to be assessed for damage.
