Haslemere Museum sets £1m fundraising target

A museum has set itself a fundraising target of £1m to help it cover its annual loses.

Haslemere Museum, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary, said it would put the money into an endowment.

The museum's chairwoman, Melanie Odell, said the money generated from this would help it meet the £50,000 loses it makes every year.

She said: "As with many organisations such as ours we've been running a deficit for almost our entire history."

The museum was opened in 1888 and specialises in natural history.

Ms Odell said: "We've decided to raise £1m for an endowment fund and the interest on that will be the day-to- day running costs that we need for the museum."

She said they hoped to raise the money through fundraising events, asking people to join as members and will bequests.
