Surrey Police arrest man over Merstham hammer attack

A man has been arrested after an attack in which another man was hit on the head with a hammer.

The man was treated in hospital and later discharged after the serious assault in Merstham.

Surrey Police were called to a property in Bletchingley Road on Tuesday night where the attack happened.

Officers said a man in his 50s, from Merstham, had been arrested on suspicion of assault and was being held in custody.

Police said it had been a frightening ordeal for those who witnessed it. They added that they believed the victim and the offender were known to each other.

Det Con Errol Chetty said police were still in the early stages of an investigation and urged anyone who saw the attack, or the events leading up to it, to contact the force.
