Man questioned over Cobham 'baseball bat' brawl death

A man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of a man who had been stopped by police for questioning about a brawl in Cobham.

The suspect is one of three people arrested by Surrey police in connection with Sunday's fight in Hamilton Avenue.

Police say up to 20 people - some said to have baseball bats - were involved in the fighting in the early hours.

The Surrey force said the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) had been informed of the man's death.

A police spokesman said the suspect being questioned about the death and a teenager arrested on suspicion of assault were still in custody.

A man in his 20s, arrested on Sunday afternoon on suspicion of affray, has been released on bail.

Post-mortem tests due

Police said a van which left the scene of the brawl shortly after police arrived was later stopped in Anyards Road, but the driver collapsed while talking to officers and later died.

Officers and paramedics tried to revive the man, who was in his 50s, but he was declared dead at about 02:45 BST.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place.

The force said officers were investigating whether there was a connection between the fight and the man's death.

A spokeswoman for the IPCC said: "We were notified about the incident and are expecting to receive a referral from the force."
