A teenager with schizophrenia who stabbed a friend to death after taking drink and drugs has been sent to a secure hospital indefinitely.

Liam Martin, now 19, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Jake Bates, 19, due to diminished responsibility.

Guildford Crown Court heard the killing happened in Martin's bedroom at his home in Roundhill Way, Guildford on 22 September last year.

The prosecution withdrew a murder charge after Martin pleaded not guilty.

The court was told Martin plunged a meat cleaver into Mr Bates's neck after an argument.

Martin's mother, Sonia Arthur, found Mr Bates dying on the bedroom floor and called 999.

Mr Bates was pronounced dead at the scene.
