Teenager sexually assaulted in tunnel under Epsom racecourse

A teenager has been sexually assaulted on her way home from a night out in Epsom.

The girl was grabbed by a man who attempted to kiss her in the pedestrian tunnel under Epsom racecourse, in Surrey, at about 03:00 GMT on Saturday.

PC Gemma Taylor said it was not known whether the man had followed her from the town centre or was loitering on Epsom Downs.

The girl was able to break free from the attacker and run away.

'Terrifying ordeal'

The girl had visited the taxi rank near Epsom clock tower and walked up Ashley Avenue towards the bandstand before heading towards Tattenham Corner, where she walked into the pedestrian tunnel.

Ms Taylor said it was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, and appealed to anyone who saw anything suspicious along the route to come forward.

The attacker is described as white, of medium build, about 5ft 8in (1.7m) tall and aged between 20 and 35. He was wearing a black jumper with the hood up and black trousers.

"I would also appeal to anyone who has their suspicions around someone they know who fits the description of the offender and cannot account for their whereabouts at the time of the offence to make contact with police," said Ms Taylor.
