'Ejected car engine' injures man on M3 in Surrey

A man has been seriously injured as he stood on the hard shoulder of a motorway in Surrey after he stopped to help another motorist who had crashed.

A silver BMW hit the central reservation of the M3 on the London-bound carriageway between junctions three and two at 23:50 GMT on Sunday.

The car stopped in the second lane and a man in his 40s stopped to help.

An Audi A5 then hit the BMW causing the engine and gearbox to be ejected from the car, injuring the man.

He received life-changing injuries, Surrey Police said.

The injured man was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London, where he remains in a serious condition.

The driver of the BMW was not injured and the driver of the Audi received minor injuries, police said.

The motorway was closed until 04:30 on Monday.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Surrey Police.
