Police ram A3 wrong-way driver head on

Police officers in an unmarked car decided to ram a vehicle coming the wrong towards them on the A3 in Surrey when they realised it was not going to stop.

Surrey Police said the officers took the decision to "make tactical contact, or ram it" as the vehicle, a VW Polo, approached them at speed.

The Polo driver was taken to hospital and later arrested.

The officers were taken to hospital to be checked.

'Head-on' collision

Insp Richard Mallett, of Surrey Police, said the officers were travelling to the scene at Ripley at about 03:40 GMT when they saw the VW Polo approaching them southbound at speed.

He said they decided to make "tactical contact" and the cars crashed "head on".

The woman in the Polo is not thought to have been seriously hurt.

Surrey Police said the driver was later arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been informed of the crash which is routine in such cases, Insp Mallett said.

The crash was one of two that closed the A3 in both directions overnight.

A Vauxhall Zafira hit a fence on the northbound carriageway at Thursley at about 03:25 and rolled over several times.
