A man who died after apparently shooting himself in a gun shop in Surrey has been named as 76-year-old Michael Belford.

Mr Belford, who was living in Redhill, visited John Powell Gun Makers in Church Street, Reigate, just after 09:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Surrey Police were called to the scene after a gun was fired. Mr Belford was declared dead at the scene.

Det Insp Antony Archibald said no-one else was involved.

'File prepared'

The shooting has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) because Mr Belford had recently been in contact with Surrey Police.

The IPCC sent the case back to the force to investigate locally.

Det Insp Archibald said: "We now believe there was no third-party involvement or suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a file is being prepared for the coroner."

The shop sells vintage guns, shotguns, rifles and airguns.
