Surrey firefighter dies on duty

A firefighter in Surrey has died on duty.

Clifford Cox died at Staines fire station on Saturday evening. It is understood he suffered a heart attack in the kitchen.

Surrey's chief fire officer Russell Pearson said Mr Cox had served as a firefighter for nearly 25 years.

Mr Pearson said it was a very difficult time for all his staff, particularly while they were continuing to deal with flooding.

Staines has experienced some of the worst of the recent flooding, with residents in the town having to be evacuated after homes were swamped by water from the swollen Thames.

In a statement to colleagues at Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, Mr Pearson said: "We are deeply saddened and upset by this tragic news and our thoughts are with his family, friends and close colleagues at this very difficult time."

He said Mr Cox would be "greatly missed", adding: "This is understandably a very difficult time for all, particularly in light of the ongoing major incident and the demands placed on all staff."
