Thirteen suspected illegal immigrants were seen getting out of a lorry on the M25 and running along the motorway hard shoulder.

People reported seeing a large group getting out of the back of the lorry between junction 11 for Chertsey and junction 12 for the M3.

Surrey Police said they were seen running from the back of an HGV, which drove off before officers arrived.

Thirteen people were arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.

Rush-hour traffic had to be slowed on the motorway as officers dealt with the incident at about 08:50 BST.

In a statement, Surrey Police said: "The 13 people, including men and women, were located walking along the M25 and were arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.

"They are currently in custody and the UK Border Agency has been informed."

Details of the nationalities and ages of those held were not available.
