Up to £1m has been spent clearing a Surrey river in a bid to protect a borough from future flooding.

Godalming was badly hit by power cuts and about 70 homes in the borough were flooded by the River Wey. A further 160 flooded in Guildford and Cranleigh.

The Environment Agency said the River Wey had been cleared of sand and trees.

Waverley Council's leader Robert Knowles said communication lines had also been improved to improve future co-operation between agencies.
