River Arun search man located at home in Arundel

Police have called off their search of a river in West Sussex after a man suspected to be missing was found.

The alarm was raised shortly before 0800 BST by a driver who saw a man wearing a pair of shorts preparing to jump into the River Arun at 0230 BST.

The driver saw the man swimming towards Arundel, leaving his clothes by the side of the Arundel by-pass road. They were still there several hours later.

Police said a family member called to say the man was home by about midday.

Sonar craft

The identity of the 20-year-old man, who lives in Arundel, has not been revealed.

The river bank and nearby areas were searched by divers and specialist officers who also used a craft equipped with sonar to check up and down the river.

HM Coastguard was also informed.

"We believe the man had just gone for a swim and could not recall where his clothes were," said Insp Kim Hudson.

"The family called as a result of media coverage."
