Two security guards were robbed as they were delivering cash to a building society in Hove.

Sussex Police said two men approached the security guards at the Nationwide in Church Road late on Monday night.

The robbers were not armed but there was a struggle, after which the guards handed over the cash, officers said.

Police believe about £40,000 was stolen. The raid is being linked to a similar robbery at Santander on Thursday night when £20,00 was taken.

Appealing for witnesses, Det Insp Lee Horner said the robbery had happened at about 2335 BST.

'Taken a beating'

He said the raid had been upsetting for the guards.

"One of them has taken a beating from the suspects," he said.

"He was not too badly injured, thankfully, but he has been assaulted while they were trying to get the cashbox off him."

He said police wanted to hear from anyone who had seen anything suspicious in the area, or who had seen the vehicles the men may have used to get away.

Police said two other robberies in the same area of the city last week were not linked to the Nationwide and Santander raids.
