Police have released a photo of a man they want to trace over the rape of a student at Brighton University.

Sussex Police said a woman in her 20s was attacked at her accommodation on the Falmer campus in the early hours of 27 November 2009.

Detectives want to speak to a man known as Fernando, who the victim met earlier that night, to "establish what happened".

He is said to be of Mediterranean appearance, 6ft tall and in his 20s.

'Difficult investigation'

He also had long dark hair and a nose ring.

Det Con Jane Walker said: "Continued support has been offered to the victim throughout this difficult and comprehensive investigation.

"Extensive inquiries have been made by the team of detectives working on this case and I am now releasing the photo of a man, who gave his name as Fernando, as I hope members of the public may recognise him.

"I wish to trace him as I believe he may be able to significantly assist detectives in establishing what happened last November.

"I'm appealing directly to him and to anyone who may know him to come forward."
