Worthing Sainsbury's security guard cashbox robbery

A cashbox has been stolen from a security guard outside a West Sussex supermarket.

The robbery happened at Sainsbury's in Downland Business Park in Worthing at about 1200 GMT on Tuesday.

The two suspects, described as white and between 5ft 10in and 6ft (1.68m and 1.8m), drove away in a Ford Mondeo which was followed by a Subaru Impreza.

Sussex Police said the security van driver suffered severe bruising and was taken to Worthing Hospital.

Det Insp Trevor Bates said: "This was a violent attack on a security guard and we are offering him our continued support. This is being treated as an isolated incident."

He said the Mondeo was abandoned and set on fire after the attack.

Two men were later seen going into a subway near Worthing town centre, where they tried to break into the cashbox with an axe.

A police spokeswoman said the box was being forensically examined to see if it had been opened.
