Worthing man arrested after baby girl dies

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of an 11-month-old baby from West Sussex.

Police said paramedics called to an address in Nursery Lane, Worthing on Friday morning resuscitated the baby girl, who had stopped breathing.

She was taken to Worthing Hospital then transferred to St Thomas's in London, where she died on Saturday.

The man, from Worthing, was arrested at St Thomas's by detectives from Sussex. He was later bailed until 20 June.

A post-mortem examination is to be carried out in London on Monday to establish the reason for the child's death.

"At this stage we are sufficiently concerned to make this arrest and my team will strive to ensure that we establish the truth surrounding the circumstances," said Det Ch Insp Trevor Bowles.
