A woman was attacked by a man and dragged into a side street in Brighton before being sexually assaulted.

Sussex Police said the attack happened shortly before 0300 BST as the woman was walking in Eastern Road.

The victim was dragged into Park Street and pushed to the ground. A passing cyclist intervened and chased the man away.

The attacker is described as white, of stocky build, around 5ft 5ins and aged in his 20s to early 30s.

Police have issued a CCTV image of a man seen in Dorset Gardens around the time of the attack who they would like to speak to.

Officers said shortly after the incident, a second woman was followed by a man who ran towards her in Coombe Road but he fled after she started screaming.

Det Insp John Wallace said: "We did initially believe these two frightening incidents may be linked but after talking to both victims we have ruled out a link."
