Hole opens up in road in Eastbourne

A hole 1.4m (3ft 6in) deep has opened up in the middle of a busy road in an East Sussex town centre.

Seaside Road in Eastbourne was shut between Queen's Gardens and Bourne Street after the hole appeared in the afternoon.

East Sussex County Council said, on the surface, the hole appeared to be 6in-wide (15cm) and a few feet long but is believed much larger below the surface.

The council said the road is expected to remain closed for two or three days.

The authority said its engineers had made the site safe.

Traffic diversion routes have been put in place via Cavendish Place, Marine Parade Road and Marine Parade.
