Man shot and injured with BB gun in Littlehampton
A man has been treated for minor injuries after he was hit in the back of the head by a BB gun pellet in West Sussex.
He told police a group of four or five youths shot at him in Sea Road, Littlehampton, just before 2250 BST on Wednesday.
Officers searched the area and were unable to trace the youths.
Sussex Police warned that any children who played with BB guns could trigger an armed police response.
Armed police warning
Ch Insp Jane Derrick said: "Luckily on this occasion the victim was aware that the weapon which fired the pellet was a BB gun and an armed response unit was not called to assist officers in the search for the youths.
"BB or similar spring-loaded weapons are manufactured in such a way that it is sometimes difficult for the officers to tell them apart from the real thing without close examination.
"This means that anyone carrying or using one of these weapons in public could easily find themselves confronted by armed police officers."
She added that anyone carrying a loaded BB gun in a public place risked a £5,000 fine or six months' imprisonment or both.
