A 37-year-old man has appeared in court charged with causing death by careless driving after a crash in East Sussex.

Alvin Atkins is charged in relation to a crash involving an East Sussex Highways vehicle and a Mini near Herstmonceux on 17 December 2010.

Daniel Martin, 31, from Horam, died after the ambulance taking him to hospital also crashed.

Mr Atkins, from St Leonards, was remanded on bail until 2 September at Eastbourne Magistrates' Court.

His next appearance will be at the same court.

No proceedings

The ambulance Mr Martin was in was being driven by a roads policing officer.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission said Sussex Police should investigate the second crash which took place in Ninfield.

A report was later passed to the Kent Crown Prosecution Service and it was decided there should be no criminal proceedings against anyone involved in the second collision.

Sussex Police said the officer involved was taken off driving duties for a period but had since returned to operations.
