Brighton shop staff foil attempted armed robbery

Staff in a Brighton shop chased away an armed robber who demanded cash and goods while brandishing a large knife.

The man, in his late 20s or early 30s, told the assistant at Mulberry Stores, Whitehawk Way, that he wanted money, scratch-cards and tobacco.

But police said he left empty-handed after staff chased him out of the shop.

Det Sgt Steve Warner said: "Although the staff were very brave... we would not recommend that members of the public confront armed offenders."

Sussex Police, who searched the area around the shop, are appealing for witnesses to the hold-up, or anyone who saw a man running from the shop towards Fletching Close, at about 20:25 BST on Sunday.
